Joe Satriani has used the Fred® as his main bridge pickup for years. Joe asked DiMarzio for a hotter and bigger version to replace the Fred® in his Ibanez guitars. DiMarzio got this by slightly increasing the distance between the center frequencies that the coils are tuned to, without increasing DC resistance.
